Botox® (Botulinum Toxin)BOTOX® is a purified derivative of the deadly botulism toxin, which is manufactured by Allergan. BOTOX® is used by many Physicians in cosmetic matters to reduce wrinkling of the facial skin, and is also used to help prevent excessive underarm sweating. Each Vial of BOTOX® contains approximately 100 units of Neurotoxin complex, 0.5 milligram of albumin and 0.9 milligram of sodium chloride. BOTOX® basically blocks neuromuscular transmission by inhibiting the release of acetylchoine (neurotransmitter). There is evidence that re-innervation of the muscle may occur, which reverses the action of BOTOX®. In other words, BOTOX® is a temporary solution to wrinkles and excessive armpit sweating and should not be considered as a permanent cure.
BOTOX® is injected into the affected area and blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines and wrinkles. BOTOX® relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. This decreases the appearance of facial wrinkles and can lead to a more youthful appearance.
It was discovered that BOTOX® can also be used for other purposes such as the control of excessive underarm sweating. BOTOX® acts by blocking the impulse at the nerve endings, which paralyzes the small muscles that are adjacent to the sweat glands. This controls expulsion of the sweat to the skin surface.
Unfortunately, BOTOX® injections are a temporary solution to excessive underarm sweating. The injections are painful and expensive and the effects only last from four to six months. BOTOX® patients will typically need to have the injections repeated about two or three times a year.
